gamerpro.today |1 day in Prague Lesser town https://city-game-prague.com/1-day-in-prague-lesser-town/ Thu, 05 Dec 2024 15:42:37 +0000 https://city-game-prague.com/?p=5126 One day is probably not enough to explore the entire left bank of the Vltava in Prague. Definitely consider a walking tour (with or without a guide) to get an effective overview of the most interesting places and basic information. To soak up the local atmosphere, here are a few tips.

Breakfast on the street

In the Lesser Town there is a Vacek grocery store in Mostecká Street where you can buy pastries in the morning and have a coffee. They are open from 7:00 a.m.. Around the corner on the street is a cofee bar called Minners, they are open from 8:00 a.m.

For Americans, there’s a Mc Donalds a few metres away(open 7:30 a.m.), or Starbugs on Malostranské náměstí (open 8:00 a.m.).

Fun way of exploring the city

At these places you have a choice of three outdoor escape games. They are called “city games” and are a specialty in Prague. It is a tourist walk, where you use your mobile phone to discover the city.

Charles bridge tour / game tour

The interactive Charles Bridge is quietly waiting to offer you an inspiring experience of Prague that is likely to resonate with you for a long time to come. Take a stroll across the bridge, stopping at each statue and you’ll quickly discover which statue it is. Your mobile phone will be your guide. The game offers a quiz question for each statue and during the game you will take a simple test. This way you will enjoy and get to know the bridge with all the details.

Take a walk through the gardens

Lesser Town (Malá Strana) in Prague is home to several beautiful gardens and green spaces. Location: Near the Church of St. Nicholas is Vrtba Garden (Vrtbovská zahrada). Below the Charles Bridge in Lesser Town is Kampa Park (Kampa Island).

Somewhat hidden, but very popular garden with beautiful birds, peacocks is called Vojanovy sady. Locals come here to relax and contemplate.

The Holy grail tour game

In Vojanovy sady, this is where next one of the locally outdoor escape games starts. It’s called “The Search for the Holy Grail“. You will stroll through the streets of the Lesser Town, parks, stop by Lennon’s wall on the way and you won’t be bored. The tasks will lead you to Prague’s best kept secret. A pleasant walk will motivate you to have a good lunch.

Lunch at a Traditional Czech Pub

Be sure to have goulash soup with your meal. In some restaurants hearty goulash soup is served inside a hollowed-out loaf of bread. Traditional Czech dishes include “Svíčková s knedlíkem”, a dish consisting of marinated beef fillet served with a creamy vegetable sauce and usually accompanied by Czech dumplings (knedlíky).

Also check out the “specials to Beer” appetizers on the menu. You will definitely find in the offer “tlačenka”, the dish is essentially a meatloaf or cold cut made from various pork parts, mixed with spices, vinegar, and sometimes vegetables like onions or garlic, “utopenci” consisting of sausages that are pickled in a brine of vinegar, water, onions, garlic, mustard seeds, and various herbs and spices.

For dessert we definitely recommend the ducat buns with vanilla cream.

Prague Castle

The landmark in this part of the city is certainly Prague Castle. It is considered the largest castle complex in the world. Its history goes back to the 9th century.

The Emperor’s gold tour game

You can also choose one of the city games to make your trip to the castle more interesting. The game is thematically dedicated to Emperor Rudolf, Roman Emperor, King of Bohemia and Hungary. During his reign, Prague became one of the main cultural and scientific centres of Europe. His court was located in Prague Castle.

Prague in the evening

The evening views of Prague from “Malá Strana” are absolutely magical. The city changes in the early evening as the streets, bridges and historic monuments are enveloped in the warm tones of the setting sun and the night lights begin to come on.

If you are a nightlife lover, you won’t find many opportunities in this part of town.

How long does it take to walk on the Charles Bridge?

You can cross the bridge in 10-20 minutes on a very slow walk. If you play the city game “Interactive Charles Bridge Quiz”, the walk and the tasks will take you about 90 minutes. Charles Bridge is 515 m long and 9.5 m wide, the walkway is 13 m above the normal level of the Vltava River.

Is it possible to cross the Charles Bridge on foot?

The Bridge is for pedestrians only. Cyclists must dismount their bicycles and guide their bicycles so as not to endanger pedestrians crossing the bridge.

The bridge is, of course, accessible for wheelchair users from the Malostranská and Old Town Bridge Towers. In the Lesser Town, the bridge can be accessed via a stone staircase. These are in two places. From “Na Kampe” and “Saská” streets.

When to visit Charles Bridge?

The bridge is accessible 24 hours a day. It depends on the weather, of course, but there are always less people on the bridge in the morning. During the main summer tourist season, up to 30,000 people a day on average walk across Prague’s Charles Bridge.

What to touch on the Charles Bridge?

Thanks to frequent touches of the human hand, parts of the pedestal of John of Nepomuk glisten and shimmer.

There are more places on the Charles Bridge that people touch for luck. Because they are made of metal and people often rub against them, they are shiny, polished, you can safely recognize them by that. Secret wishes are fulfilled by a bronze cross set into a marble slab. The remains of the saint’s body are said to lie beneath the slab in the railing.

According to a modern legend invented by a tourist guide, the statue of John of Nepomuk is also said to bring good luck. Specifically, the relief at the bottom of the statue with the image of Wenceslas IV and his hunting dog.

What makes the Charles Bridge so famous?

Until the middle of the 19th century, the bridge was the only way to cross the Vltava River in Prague. Thanks to the stone bridge, Prague became an important stop on European trade routes. The Charles Bridge connects the Old Town with the Lesser Town.

What is the story of Charles Bridge in Prague?

Charles Bridge was built on the site of the original Judith Bridge from the second half of the 12th century.  Judith’s Bridge was destroyed by a flood in 1342. It took 55 years to build Charles Bridge. Its author was the architect Petr Parléř. Charles Bridge is an important part of the Royal Route. Future Czech kings were crowned at Prague Castle along the Royal Route until the 19th century. It starts at the Powder Gate, continues along Celetna Street to Old Town Square and then to Charles Street. It then crosses Charles Bridge to Lesser Town Square and continues along Nerudova Street to Prague Castle.

What is unique about the Charles Bridge?

Under the open sky there is a unique sculpture gallery. Especially the sunlight during the day and the changes in the weather therefore give the individual sculptures different facial expressions and allow you to observe the often hidden details of the sculptures. They speak to you again and again with their stories.

Beautiful moments on Charles Bridge
The statues on Charles Bridge were and are witnesses of beautiful moments.

How many statues are on the Bridge ?  Why are there sculptures?

There are a total of 30 statues on the Charles Bridge. Probably the oldest mention of the sculptural decoration dates back to 1419.

It is a statue of the crucified Christ. In reports from the middle of the 15th century, an equestrian statue of George of Poděbrady in the middle of the bridge is mentioned. In 1683, a statue of St. John of Nepomuk was erected on the bridge on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of his alleged death.

In 1700 a statue of St. Wenceslas was added to the bridge. This began the decoration of the entire bridge with statues of saints and by 1714 another 26 statues were placed on Charles Bridge. The youngest statue dates from 1938.

Charles Bridge is more than 600 years old. It was built in the 14th century during the reign of Charles IV and has witnessed historical events such as coronations, processions and various festivals over the centuries. When you imagine how kings, artists, craftsmen and ordinary people have walked across it, you can feel connected to this past as you walk across the bridge. The many statues that adorn the bridge tell stories of saints, legends and historical events.

Many of the sculptures on Charles Bridge depict saints, biblical motifs or Christian symbols. This reminds us how religious values and spiritual quests have shaped human lives and history.

Beauty in the details

Most people only get a glimpse of the sculptures, but underneath their appearance there is a tremendous amount of detail that conveys more than just simple images. Attention to detail teaches us patience and the ability to perceive beauty in all aspects of our lives, not just the obvious.

“On your journey you can be guided and accompanied by “The Charles Bridge Mysterium” , unique outdoor escape game. Through a fun game and quiz, you will stop at each statue and explore it better. Charles Bridge and its statues become a living teacher and a bridge that connects us to the past. “

The sculptures on the Charles Bridge offer deeper lessons about human life and values. Believe me, if you look at them not only as art objects but also as symbols, you can take away many important lessons from them.

Bear in mind

The depiction of important historical figures and events on the statues shows us how important it is to preserve memories of the past and pass them on to the next generation. Many statues were erected to pay tribute to people who played an important role in history, which leads us to reflect on the importance of memory and tradition for the Czech nation.
